Vector displacement maps are coming to Blender 3d in the 3.5 version update (hopefully). It's on 3.4.1 currently.
Vector displacement maps (VDMs) are like grey scale height maps on steroids. They contain additional detail and can have incredibly detailed information in the map brush. Currently Zbrush and Mudbox use VDMs.
"Vector displacement incorporates elements of a normal map by using RGB colors to add a directional value to each of the map’s pixels. Like other difference maps, it compares the model’s current subdivision level with its highest level, but because of the vector value it can move the rendered surface to perfectly match the high resolution sculpt." from Zbrush website.
This is an example of a VDM brush in Zbrush.
The difference is ZBrush is $900US while Blender 3d is free.
