As I was looking up something else I stumbled on this. Maybe everyone already knows this but it was new for me.

CURA can interpret grey scale height maps for printing.

I just think this is super cool. Just drop your grey scale height map into CURA and it will make a 3d print from it.

You can export it an STL which is another cool feature.

Was here in Fl when hurricane Ian hit. I captured the radar image of it making landfall. Converting to B&W gave me a grey scale .BMP that i pulled into Cura and exported back out as an .STL.
Then, I imported the .STL into TinkerCAD where I overlaid text and added a top hanger. Exporting it back out as an .STL, allowed me to bring it back into Cura for final slicing and printing.
Must have handed out at least 100 of these. Hold it up to the light and you can see the spiral thru it.
