Next big project - Oni samurai

310 Views 25 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Oscar56
I was torn between a steam punk octopus monster or an oni samurai.

I think I am going with the samurai. Again around 16-20 inches tall. I will start designing today and try to figure out what pose I want him in.

I get to use a lot of the skills I've picked up with the last two big projects...hopefully.

Should be fun and I'll drag you all along.

Again around 16-20 inches tall.
How does that compare to the capacity of your machine(s)?
I have a build volume of 11.8" x 11.8" x 12" so will have to do it in parts. I would do it in parts anyway to reduce time wastage in case of print failures. I am planning on doing it in 5 to 6 parts.

My mech is 17" tall and it was done in 5 pieces.

I am going to start modeling this afternoon. Trying to do a little woodworking before all my motivation goes away.

Cool! I wanna see it built!
On a completely unrelated tangential note about Sumo instead of Samurai:
Was in Daytona one fine spring break having lunch at the Starlite Diner (classic chrome & red "subway car") when I saw an idiot spring breaker (isn't "idiot spring breaker" redundant?), on a boogie board, holding a tow rope, attached to a PU truck's trailer hitch, "skiing" down the (dry) street ... in a SUMO WRESTLER FAT SUIT for "safety".
Naturally, they were INSTANTLY pulled over by the local LEO's! The kid in the Sumo suit got a ride (suit and all), presumably, to the county Greybar Hotel.
A week passes, same bat-time, same bat-place, and the bus from rte 92 (which passes the Greybar) pulls up at the stop across A1A and off pops the kid in the Sumo suit (like, its gotta be the same kid, right?) A week in the Greybar is typical for a Spring Break D&D (Drunk & Disorderly)! Guess he was a good boy!

Just 3d doodling. Not sure what direction I want to go with the oni. Still looking at reference images.

blocking out the figure with different parts using a purchased male 3d model as a manikin. Getting a sense on what I need and maybe how to do it.

I will be redoing all of the individual part 3d models for the final version.Still haven't decided on the final pose.

How precisely will that print, Oscar? Will it be fairly faithful to the rendering?
Surprisingly so. Or at least I think so. I will still have to prepare for printing when I am done which means cleaning up all the bad geometry (or most of it) and I will lose some detail. Also another reason I am going big.

Resin is of course a magnitude better at capturing detail but I just don't want to deal with the mess, smell and poisonous nature of it.

Majority of the piece parts modeled. Still have the arduous task of joining and making the model printable and also have to figure out the pose I want. I am debating whether combat ready stike a pose or an action pose.

I am struggling to find a pose that I really like. Just doing some rough poses to see if anything sticks to the wall.

This is what I am finally going with. The next step is to clean up the model for 3d printing and finally figuring out how I am going to chop it up for printing.

This is how I am splitting up the model. Shrinking down to about 12 inches tall otherwise each part would have taken about 48 hours to print each. Way too long.

Does Blender do that automation for you or is that something separate?
I did use Blender. It's a 3d animation software along with modeling.

To cut the figure up I had to use several different techniques within Blender.

I've started printing.

I had back to back failures of the print base. It was 9"x6" print and had adhesion problems on one side. After a couple of hours one corner would pull up and the print would fail. Did it twice in the same location. So don't have my temps right but I think I am going to just redesign the base. I'll print last.

40 some hours and I have two parts printed. They were tight. I should have given it some clearance but oh well.

Four more parts to go. Probably about 50 more hours.

I can't even imagine doing a job that took that long! Looking, good, though!
It's taking a while for me to get comfortable with the long run times as well. I am still only comfortable with around 24 hours so far. One reason I chopped up the model so much.

There are many models out there that are several day prints in one go. I am not quite ready for that but it really is set it and forget it. I just make sure the first layer is down and then only periodically check in on it.
