Howdy folks.

Relatively new to 3d printing. Got an inexpensive FDM printer about 4-5 months ago and its been running pretty much non-stop.

Not new to 3d modeling using artistic modeling software: Blender 3d, Zbrush, 3d Coat. I don't like CAD.

Primarily do cnc patterns up to this point. There is probably 90% overlap, but there are some differences.

David, nice to see you on here.

The overlap is the basic 3d modeling skills are the same. The difference is the final 3d model manifold structure you are aiming for. 3d print models are way more unforgiving on internal geometry intersections and overlaps in complex models with multiple pieces.

CAD does produce less issues in this regard, though you can still create bad 3d print models with it.

With artistic 3d model software you can model any way you want and have total freedom to move stuff around at any point. This can lead you down a very dark road with a model that then requires a lot of work to make it 3d printable. For cnc patterns, this doesn't matter as much.

Sorry, probably not explaining very well.
